1. The Democrats have a real problem on Gorsuch and obstructionism going forward.

Why is this a problem specifically for Democrats?
-
Exactly! GOP not likely to change playbook next time Dems in power. So only Dems can save democracy? By going along with terrible ideas?

In the long run you simply have to hope the other party doesn't remain this aberrant and malicious.

Ima let you finish but Dems observing norms while GOP doesn't is a nonstarter.
-
Exactly, until Republicans learn that Dems are willing to play hardball as they have done for years it isn't possible to return to normal.

For better or worse, making decisions based on "long run" is now a bad idea. Have to think at most 18 months ahead. Game has changed.

Dems can't make that come back. So that's not the choice here. If the parties de-polarize it will be because of a major historical event.
-
If Ds are flexible, the end result will be surrendering and letting only the GOP create policy, because the GOP will obstruct Dem policy.

The system functions when both sides want it to. No point in pretending the GOP wants it to.
