5. Re-reading Making It, I realized I had blocked out how often Podhoretz compares writing to achieving an erection (block=impotence)
6. Podhoretz is of course a monster of self-regard, so masturbation metaphors are apt.
7. I have more thoughts on Podhoretz here:https://newrepublic.com/article/141524/norman-podhoretzs-war-haters-losers …
8. I don't think people fully understand the size of Podhoretz's ego. It's one of the wonders of the world, as sublime as the Grand Canyon.
9. According to Podhoretz when he started writing for the New Yorker, it was an "extraordinary event" of national significancepic.twitter.com/8rGnZvxenm
10. Podhoretz gave up literary criticism because writers of his time (Nabokov, Flannery O'Connor, Baldwin) not good enough for his talent
11. Podhoretz's politics are his egoism write large. Nationalism (America is greatest country evah) just narcissism (I'm greatest) extended
12. Ultimately Podhoretz is a prophetic figure. In 1967 narcissism of Making It was widely mocked. Now it's the governing ideology of USA
13. Podhoretz: An outer borough boy who used shameless self-promotion to impress Manhattan elite (which despised him). Also Trump.
14. For Podhoretz humanity divides into 2: winners (those who "made it" like him) versus haters/losers (poor, women, gays, blacks, etc).
15. Podhoretz's self-love (masturbatory or not) is the Rosetta Stone for understanding conservatism, I argue here:https://newrepublic.com/article/141524/norman-podhoretzs-war-haters-losers …
OK but you have to compare him to other massive narcissists of the era, e.g. Mailer, Gore Vidal, who were not all conservatives.
