I have a theory that Heinlein's turn away from hard science fiction post 1960 was due to realizing how limited real future will be.

Post 1960 He was closer thematically to New Wave but lacked stylistic chops, so he fell between camp of old and new.

He did, and if he had been younger he could've reached the level of, say, Le Guin or Wolfe. But the years writing pulp hampered him.
