Those comments seem divorced from reality but to me more explicable, given political tribalism and psychological rationalization.

What I find startling about them is that they are the opposite of how I understand Trump's "brand." He fetishizes selfishness!

IDK if "projective reaction formation" is the precise term to use but that's the gist of it. Reality is better as its opposite.

Yes, I think that's right. But makes it impossible for me to know what reaction people will have to, say, Flynn being a spy.

Oh a good chunk will be certain this is a fake story cooked up by partisan deep state operatives to launch a coup.

And I'm still skeptical "Flynn is a spy" will be the story, should it check out at all. Logan Act, maybe? (For the 1st time?)

But remember, Dems don't have to convince die hards Trumpers. Just shave off a small percentage and boost Dem turnout.

To do what though? The hope of winning seats in 2018 isn't enough. We need GOP defectors now.

Unless something huge happens there won't be any GOP defections. Party is all in with Trump.

No way Republicans act as any type of check on trump. Nothing will stop him but ppl in streets.

I think in some cases, like ACA repeal, some congressional Republicans *may* be the intermediaries between people in the streets and Trump.

yes perhaps for solitary issues. I can see building on that to drive wedges later. But no R is about-facing.

agreed, but imo trump himself is not mark. Congress/other R's are. Trump is lost cause.
