At least the Julius Rosenberg & Alger Hiss helped the Russians when Russia was a crucial ally in life-and-death war.
I know the argument but it's based on typical American under-estimation of Soviet science.

It wasn't a science problem. Manhattan Project was massive INDUSTRIAL effort to try multiple methods in parallel.
