      3. Cruz has all sorts of good personal reasons to despise Trump and not endorse Trump in general election.

      5. It's no exaggeration to say that to win the nomination Trump tried to destroy Cruz's marriage. That's a pretty serious attack.

      6. But despite all this, Cruz will swallow his pride & endorse Trump. Why? Because he wants to win nomination in 2020.

      7. The root mistake @DouthatNYT was to think of Rubio & Cruz as honorable people who would flinch from endorsing Trump out of moral scruple

      8. For Douthat, the GOP is a vehicle designed to achieve a goal (advance Christian conservatism). Not so for Rubio, Cruz & other politicians

      9. For Rubio, Cruz & other pols, the GOP is a vehicle for personal advancement. And if party picks Trump, they have to endorse Trump.

      10. As I said before, smart play is to be like @dick_nixon in 1964: endorse terrible candidate, work to salvage down ballots, pick up pieces

      11. This shows the limits of #NeverTrump. Intellectuals & writers like Douthat can be #NeverTrump. Pols like Rubio & Cruz can't be.

@HeerJeet Good points. I do think that Cruz is done as national candidate.

@MUGGER1955 No, I think he's in a good position to pick up the pieces from the wreckage, as Nixon did in 1968

@HeerJeet One, Nixon was more centrist. Two, still way to early to speculate on wreckage.

@HeerJeet @MUGGER1955 I too think Cruz is done as a natl candidate. Too far to the right on too many issues to have a broad natl appeal.
