4. Aside from myself, my New Republic colleagues, including @brianbeutler @elspethreeve & @JamilSmith took Trump very seriously from start.
5. By "taking seriously" I mean not only did TNR argue since last summer Trump could win nominee but also forthrightly called him a racist
6. I do think that outlets like CNN were irresponsible in giving Trump so much airtime without equal time to fact-checking his many lies.

8. The major sin of media was not covering Trump but false equivalence (both-side-ism):https://twitter.com/markjgreen/status/713902856261255168 …
Jeet Heer added,
9. Both-side-ism is a product of 2 party system & mainstream media trying to distinguish itself as objective & non-partisan.
10. In normal politics, both-side-ism makes a lot of sense. You try to quote both sides, given them equal weight, let readers decide.
11. In normal politics, where both sides are roughly equally honest, both-side-ism is fine. But when you get a bullshit artist like Trump?
12. Problem with both-side-ism clear in scientific controversies like climate & vaccination where one side is engaged in pseudo-science
13. Trump has basically exploited the same systemic weaknesses that allows climate denial to flourish in GOP & parts of media.
14. We see both-side-ism at work in how CNN allows deranged Trump surrogates like Jeffrey Lord airtime. "Have to hear from both sides..."
15. Problem of both-side-ism is going to become severe if & when Trump is nominee. Mainstream media will treat him like a normal candidate
