1. David Brooks latest column should provoke some thoughts on the rise of Trump & the failure of the pundit classpic.twitter.com/H5Udjyfcd2
2. Brooks blames failure of him & his peers to foresee rise of Trump on circumscribed social circle:
3. We "were not socially intermingled with his supporters." Some truth here. I suspect I know more Trump fans than Brooks does.
4. But the social limits that Brooks describes are part & parcel with a limited ideological horizon.
5. Brooks is a very moderate neo-conservative. Many of the people who columnize in Washington Post, New York Times, etc. are same.
6. I've complained before about ideological narrowness of Washing Post liberal columnists (who tend to hug the center). Same true of right
7. Washington Post conservative columnists include: Gerson, Kagan, Krauthammer, Rubin, Thiessen, Will & Zakaria.
8. Post does have one heterodox figure: the excellent libertarian Radley Balko. Otherwise straight GOP establishment types.
9. The Washington Post doesn't need to hire pro-Trump columnists but should hire columnists who understand Trump's base.
@sarahposner C'mon, you don't want to start a revolution here, do you?
