Jeet Heer added,
2. National Review has a long history of acting as the gatekeeper of the right, which I discuss here:https://newrepublic.com/article/122804/national-reviews-trump-dilemma-kick-him-out-keep-his-fans …
3. Gatekeeping role has led NR to occasionally purge various people/movements from right: John Birch Society, libertarians, Geo. Wallace etc
4. This history gets celebrated in triumphalist terms -- i.e. NR helped create "respectable right" by kicking out kooks.
5. As I try and show in my article, reality is a bit different. Birchers kooky but NR in alliance with them from 1958 to 1965.
6. And what really turned NR agains Birchers was Vietnam war (which Birchers started to question, as well as Cold War consensus).
7. Also, as @notjessewalker shrewdly noted, it's not clear that NR's various purges were in fact effective.
8. Birchers remained force long after purge (peaked in late 1960s, early 1970s). Same with Ayn Rand, libertarians.
9. Most significant recent purge was 1990s of paleo-cons for being too overtly racist (Sobran, Francis, Buchanan, etc.).
10. The thing with paleo-cons purged is they didn't go away: they continued to have audience & were precursors to Trumpism
11. Not sufficiently appreciated (except by @michaelbd) that Sam Francis & Pat Buchanan were fathers of alt-right, key Trumpist movement.
12 So, one big thought is that ability of National Review to purge people on the right tends to be overstated by historians/journalists.
13. To extent that NR did once have power to purge, that was in very different media environment than exists now.
