@HeerJeet I think that is a bit unfair. One can reject a 50% quota, but still think the appointment of any given women is great.

@amlamey But if argument is unqualified women being promoted, incumbent on opponents of AA to say who is incompetent.

@HeerJeet Not sure that follows. One might object to the quota on grounds it devalues appointment of qualified women.

@amlamey It seems to me that if you believe quotas undermine meritocracy you have to think there are not enough qualified women.

@HeerJeet 'Meritocracy' is red herring. Would be helpful to ban it in this discussion.

@amlamey Absolutely agree. But I'm not the one who introduced idea of meritocracy. That was Coyne and Kay!

@amlamey My whole point all along has been meritocracy frame makes no sense for positions involving appointment of political representatives

@HeerJeet I'm not sure I'd go that far. If Rob Ford were elected as federal liberal, I would say he did not merit appointment in cabinet.

@amlamey If Rob Ford were only Liberal elected in Alberta or Quebec, he would be in the cabinet!

@HeerJeet But if you think, as surely right, that would be a problem, notion of 'merit' can have some relevance, so your view goes to far.

@amlamey It's a problem only in sense that democracy is sometimes a problem -- as it was when Ford was mayor of Toronto.
