      4. The complexity, which Cenac is aware of & goes out of his way to emphasize is that he came to Stewart with expectations of mentorship

      5. Cenac's desire for mentor partially a natural young artist thing but also rooted in fact his father killed when he was 4.

      6. Added to Cenac's loss of father is that, by his account, his mother was controlling & he became estranged from her.

      7. The expectation of mentorship was a reasonable one, and not just for personal reasons. Mentorship is major way people advance.

      8. Anyways, for whatever reason, Steward & Cenac didn't have that sort of relationship, had more formal boss/employee relationship.

      9. When Cenac needed to call out Stewart, formality of relationship was one hindrance (and also him being only black writer on staff).

      10. All of this exacerbated bad situation of Stewart becoming hyper-defensiveness and berating Cenac. A perfect storm.

      11. The whole story is laid out beautifully by fact that Cenac is so self-aware (and has clearly thought about this alot).

      12. And of course Maron, as he often does, serves as perfect interviewee, allowing Cenac to go deeper and deeper into ramifications of story

@HeerJeet didn't seem to me that Maron understood how race factored in; Cenac crying on bleachers was sort of heart breaking

@sameer_ashar Maron, like not a few white liberals, obtuse on race. His interview with Jimmy J.J. Walker like that too.
