      1. Forget the slavery and Civil War. Think about what it means that Confederate flag was revived in 1950s & 1960s.

      2. Why was flag revived in 1950s and not earlier? Because when Jim Crow was entrenched, flag wasn't need to intimate blacks.

      3. The flag was revived in a period when African-Americans in South were getting increasing help from Federal gov't (Brown v. Board, etc).

      4. So the message of the flag was: the feds might try to help you, but remember who is the boss down here. We still rule.

      5. Decode that flag: "You think your friends in Washington will help you? March all you want. Doesn't matter. We still rule."

      6. So liberals, especially Northern liberals, are being more than clueless when they say that this is "only about symbols."

      7. Those symbols are exertion of raw power. That's why flag is defended. That's why flag is fought.

      8. Let's take another symbol. Gay Pride Parades. On on hand, just symbolic events, don't effect policy.

      9. But imagine living in a city with no gay pride parades (i.e. entire world before 1970s and much of the world now.)

          10. The world sans gay pride parade is different than ours in more than just symbolic ways.

          11. Pride parades don't just celebrate gay rights, they expanded what is politically imaginable and hence politically possible.
