12. Critics like Pauline Kael complained that characters in Kubrick's movies -- like Nicholson's Torrance were too hammy, too cartoony.
13. With Kubrick always best to assume he knew what he was doing. If he elicited cartoony performances, it was because he's making cartoons
14. And in fact, there are cartoon references strewn through Kubrick's work.
15. The Mickey Mouse song at end of Full Metal Jacket, the Snoopy cameo in same movie, the Bugs Bunny cartoon in Eyes Wide Shut.
17. One thing about animated cartoons is that every frame has to be planned. Nothing can be left to chance. The Kubrick aesthetic.
18. Those hostile to Kubrick --- again, Kael the most eloquent -- thought movies too icy, precise, inhumane.
19. But what if Kubrick wasn't (as Kael thought) a failed humanist. Maybe his model was cartoons, rather than, say, theater.
20. The longer Kubrick lived, the longer it took for him to make movies, because he wanted them to be more and more precise.
21. The precision of Kubrick's movies explains the informational density he was able to achieve and why they improve on repeated viewings.
22. Informational density also explains why Kubrick's movies so easily lend themselves to conspiracy theories (paging @notjessewalker)
23. There are, that I know of, at least 3 major conspiracy theories about Kubrick: I) IBM coded into HAL in 2001 II) moon landing in Shining
