      1. I wrote about the Hugo Awards mess here http://www.newrepublic.com/article/121554/2015-hugo-awards-and-history-science-fiction-culture-wars … but there is something more to say about why slate voting is wrong.

@HeerJeet Can't bring myself to care at all about the procedural issue. Easy to imagine alt universe where slate voting is used for good.

@TheIronRobot I dunno. It's hard to image how slate voting can be squared with an honest counting of personal taste.

@HeerJeet I think awards should be given for merit, not taste alone

@HeerJeet Easy to imagine prevailing attitudes resulting in the exclusion of highly meritorious works that everyone might enjoy

@HeerJeet e.g. pervasive racist, sexist, politically intolerant attitudes

@HeerJeet Can't see why a coordinated campaign to get excluded works of great merit by diverse authors wouldn't be perfectly legit.

@HeerJeet Obviously that's not what's happening with the Puppies. But if it were what was happening, I wouldn't object

@HeerJeet The problem is that their politics are horrid and their slate lacks merit, not that they have politics and a slate

@TheIronRobot I think all those things are problems: politics, merit & slate.

@HeerJeet If nominees aren't to be chosen on the basis of merit then in what sense is the list a product of "the *wisdom* of crowds"?

@HeerJeet "Wisdom of crowds" implies that there are wise nominations and unwise nominations.
