      5. Groening's claim was based on the authority of experience: he based central characters in The Simpsons on his family, work was autobio.

      6. Simon's claim was based on authority of expertise: he knew how to take idea & turn it into a viable show. Was a TV professional.

      7. Groening's anger was partially based on fact he was put in a golden cage: his ideas used, he got rich, but little imput into show.

      8. Simon trapped in his own golden cage: got to run show, staff knew his importance but outside world saw it as Groening's baby.

      9. Interestingly, one of the scripts Groening & Simon collaborated on deals with how origin stories are mythical: http://www.simpsonsarchive.com/episodes/7G07.html …

      10. In "The Tell-Tale Head" (writtten by Groening, Simon, Al Jean, Mike Reiss) we're introduced to the semi-mythical Jebediah Springfield

      11. Jebediah Springfield is the supposed founder of Springfield but even in this early episode clear tales about him are folkloric.

      12. In later episodes, it becomes clear that almost all the stories about founding father Jebediah Springfield are lies, myths, tall tales.

      13. But The Simpsons rarely settles for just debunking Jebediah Springfield. Instead show suggests town needs its myths.

      14. I'll resist temptation to do a Straussian reading of The Simpsons as suggesting that the polis needs noble lies....

      15. What I want to suggest is that Jebediah Springfield is in fact Matt Groening: the mythical founder credited with creating the town.

          16. In effect, through the figure of Jebediah Springfiled, Simon & other writers reconciled themselves to letting Groening get credit.

@HeerJeet Usually the writer credit is just a courtesy with a show written by the whole staff, not sure if it was this way with The Simpsons

@magicwhistle Yes, that's exactly how it is with Simpsons. Show was written in roomfull of writers.
