@KerryD_Mitchell @bartbeaty because the meaning of the image extends well beyond intent (which I can only guess at in any case).

@HeerJeet That's like a lit critic saying they understand A Modest Proposal, but the average reader won't.

@KerryD_Mitchell According to Wayne Booth, about 20% of students read "A Modest Proposal" as call to eat Irish babies.

@HeerJeet hopefully, she learned that much in the class.

@KerryD_Mitchell Not all humor succeeds & no art is beyond critique. Whatever intent, CH's racial humor can be seen as promoting racism.

@HeerJeet I think this is the whole problem with "images have more power". You've left aside your own interpretation for a surface reading.

@KerryD_Mitchell With works of mass culture, it's reasonable to look at "surface reading" (which is how such works are experienced).

@HeerJeet Nobody goes around saying, "I always hated MAD for how they made fun of that kid with the big ears."

@KerryD_Mitchell MAD comics faced censorship threat -- that's why it became magazine. See Hajdu's "10 cent Plague."

@HeerJeet Comics came under attack by people who didn't read or appreciate them when they were selectively excerpted in other media.

@KerryD_Mitchell Right, which supports my contention that surface reading of comics is fairly common. That's what happened with CH as well

@HeerJeet I've really only been hassling you over an omission, and maybe half a sentence of your essay.

@KerryD_Mitchell No worries -- but I do think it's important to think about art not just from point of view of intent but also reception.
