      7. A step forward because Star Wars, as creak as it looks now, integrated special effects into storytelling with a new verve & plausibility

      8. Two step backs because Star Wars lacked either the extrapolative rigor of hard SF or the avante garde ambitions of New Wave SF.

      9. In terms of literary SF, Star Wars belonged to a tradition that had been disdained since the 1930s by genre elite: the space opera.

@HeerJeet Seriously? Bit of an overstatement. Given that Delany wrote some space operas. More accurate to say they unpacked, reworked them.

@HeerJeet It's a neat narrative you tell but new wave did not make ye olde SF disappear in the SF magazines/books of the time.

@JustineLavaworm Sure, space opera always had niche, but it was generally disdained. Book "Space Opera Renaissance" talks about this.

@HeerJeet I saw no disdain for space operas only for certain practitioners of them. What's your source?

@JustineLavaworm Like I said, "Space Opera Renaissance" talks about shifting fortunes of sub-genre.

@JustineLavaworm In matters of interpretation, not sure if primary source needed. I think book I details history in informed, plausible way

@HeerJeet And I'm telling you as an historian who worked closely with primary sources that your narrative is reductive.

@JustineLavaworm Well, I'd have to read your work to see how it stacks up to other existing histories of the genre.
