It's interesting that we rarely talk about the civil rights movement as a form of populism, but it was -- perhaps the most successful one.

We don't think of Civil Rights movement as populist in part because it worked with technocratic liberals. But popular protest was core.

We also don't think of CR movement as populist because it was predominately black. And we think of "the people" as implicitly white.
