Lots of great examples of the alternative superhero movie genre in my twitter feed. I won't RT them all, but it's interesting how many.

What's worth thinking about is that the Superhero genre has always had a strong tendency towards satire, parody and pure dada.

Superman premiered in 1938 and almost immediately there were not just knock-offs but satires: original Red Tornado, Plastic Man, etc.

Superman creators Shuster and Siegel themselves did a parody of their creation, Funny-Man. So self-parody is intrinsic to genre.

The current turn towards "dark and gritty" superheroe movies is attempt, understandable but wrongheaded, to hold parody & dada at bay.

@HeerJeet "Dark and gritty" is pretty easy to parody, though.

@HeerJeet DC's movies have forgotten something very important: You can be bright and funny — and still take yourself seriously.

@HeerJeet that's why I'm enjoying 'Gotham' so much -- it's gritty, but surreal, magic-realism intrudes.

@HeerJeet @theseantcollins Part of why Batman '89 is so good is that it embraces grit and dada. In retrospect, seems to have killed that fun

@HeerJeet I think some people forget that the 'serious turn' in superhero stories is at least 20 years old already.

@HeerJeet That may explain the popularity of Batman '66 right now...

@HeerJeet good point. Always struck by how un-fun and charmless Nolan's batman movies are (and all his work for that matter)
