      17. Answer to riddle is that the making of art is always childish activity. All artists & writers start making stories & images as toddlers

      19. All good artists are part children: they activate the playing part of their brain. It's only hacks who are fully adult (in bad sense).

      24. In a society of millions of artists, the critic (i.e. Scott) can easily feel beleaguered: only adult in nation of children.

but @HeerJeet I don't really feel beleaguered, because I don't view criticism as above or antagonistic to art but as co-participant.

@aoscott @HeerJeet A necessary attitude if you are a critic. Meta-critics or artists might differ.

@organicdemocrat @aoscott I have a whole riff on artists-as-kids, critics-as-adults but this twitter essay already too long.

@HeerJeet @organicdemocrat so interesting. my touchstones on that are Wilde's "Critic as Artist" and Mencken's Art of Criticism.

@aoscott @organicdemocrat Right. Critic as artist. But more recently, critic as performer. Kael as Lenny Bruce of film criticism as example

@HeerJeet @aoscott Honored to be a bookend for your essay. Meta-critics are grandparents, uber-adults.
