3. Ideal magazine long-form is 1) a substantial read 2) researched 3) synthesis of much research/reporting 4) provocative.

4. To put TNC's reparation article in genre context, think of New Yorker pieces like Hersey's Hiroshima, Arendt's Eichmann, Baldwin's Fire.

5. The advantage of a long-form magazine piece, especially in large circulation general interest mag, is it gets talked about quickly.

6. Books of course can do that but it takes a bit longer for even a best-seller to set terms of conversation.

7. And appearing in a general interest magazine gives article access to audience usually wider & more diverse than book buyers
