2. FT is a quality broadsheet -- which means you're supposed to be able to trust it even if you don't share its politics.

3. By reputation (and until now by achievement) FT is like WSJ news coverage: whatever politics are in editorial section, news is reliable.

4. Thing is, if you have a reputation for honesty, you have to work to maintain it. A big slip-up like FT on Piketty is very damaging.

5. Editors of FT are going to have to step up to the plate -- explain what happened and why. And why it won't happen again.
