@dg_myers @tonywoodlief Unfortunately in world we live in there are all sorts of barriers to enjoyment of elite art, many unnecessary.

There is no "elite art." @HeerJeet @tonywoodlief

@dg_myers @tonywoodlief Elite art simply means art that requires specialized training, as against more popular, vernacular forms.

@dg_myers @tonywoodlief Yes, but some requires more specialized training than others! There is vernacular art & Mandarin art.

You can switch your terms all you want—elite art, Mandarin art—but you are talking about a social conception of it. @HeerJeet @tonywoodlief

@dg_myers @tonywoodlief Right, but social function of art is part of what it's about (part, not all).

You are confused, @HeerJeet. You are confusing social function of art, as cultural marker, with the technical requirements of art.

@dg_myers I don't think the two are so easily disentangled, at least not historically.

Social and technical are easily disentangled. Anyone can study classical music; not everyone claims it as cultural marker. @HeerJeet

@dg_myers Ah, that's where we disagree. Not anyone can study classical music. You actually need some money. Helps to have right parents.

Ah, that's where you are wrong. The resources for studying classical music are endless and readily available. @HeerJeet
