Someone should do a profile of Michael Novak, whose entire project of aligning the Catholic church with neo-conservatism is now in ruins.

Also worthwhile to do a retro-profile of the late Richard John Neuhaus, who wanted Catholic church to embrace GOP right.

Even under JPII & Benedict, RC church was wary of neo-con embrace, although some alliances were made. But now whole project is dead.

Neo-conservatism is wrongly seen as a Jewish formation. In fact, it had a powerful Catholic dimension:Novak, Neuhaus, Weigel, Bennett, etc

Jewish neo-cons worked (unsuccessfully) to convince fellow Jews that safety of Israel required an embrace of the Republican right

Catholic neo-cons worked to show that support for Reagan/Thatcher economics was compatible with Catholic social thought.

Novak was and is the heart of Catholic neo-cons. His genius was using reforms of Vatican II to argue for church embrace of capitalism.

      9. Just as Church had made its peace with democracy in Vatican II, Novak argued it should make its peace with US style corporate capitalism.

That's why Novak framed his ideal of a neo-con theology in terms of "democratic capitalism": business was doing God's work.

Novak's project seemed half-way plausible under John Paul II & Benedict, esp. with Vatican working with CIA in Poland & elsewhere

Yet even under JPII & Benedict, there was little evidence that church took seriously Novak/Neuhaus's sanctification of capitalism.

Catholic neo-cons had greatest impact in US supreme court: Scalia, Clarence Thomas, etc.

The social issues (abortion, gay marriage etc) gave a second wind to the Novak/Neuhaus project in last decade.
