Honest question: lots of reports that AIPAC is supporting Syrian intervention. Why? Can't see how it benefits Israel.

@HeerJeet Supposedly Assad falls, they lose last major antagonistic Arab regime. (Maybe they dont think abt gaining huge Al Qaeda haven)

@das_kunk Maybe, although I think an anarchic Syria more dangerous to neighbors than a despotic one. But maybe I'm wrong.

@HeerJeet Coz if Assad not whacked, what's to stop Tehran going after Israel or Hezb rockets in Tel Aviv?

@HeerJeet AIPAC will use this as a backdoor to urge US to start a war with Iran.

@billmon1 Yeah, I suppose that's the logic. But the downside -- turning Syria into 1990s Afghanistan -- is huge. Really a wild gamble.

@HeerJeet @billmon1 More as willpower test for their guarantor, I thought: If the US won't bomb Syria post-CW, they won't bomb Iran pre-Nuke

Tricky path for Israel: chaos, but not utter. (Oh, Israel used white phosphorus. Not sarin, but still) @abrahamandsarah @das_kunk @HeerJeet

@HeerJeet Surely they think it's going to be a quick, clean elimination of a long-time foe. This is wrong, but I suspect this is the logic.

An argument that's unwinnable by either. We'd have to talk about Israel bantustans, Golan Heights. So let's agree not to.@abrahamandsarah
