    Virtually every page of Armies of the Night contains a perky, sharp metaphor. On the other hand, Mailer deserves his reputation as a sexist.

        @tanehisi It's really funny. I don't think Mailer gets enough chops for his sense of humor. He's good at writing about himself.

        @tanehisi Aside from the humor, Mailer has real insight into dynamics of anti-war movement, old left versus new left, etc.

        @HeerJeet @tanehisi it's a genius of a book--"banker running ape"--the writing, observation of lefties, writers (Lowell).

        @tanehisi @HeerJeet You mean because he was a drunk a lot in public and sounded like a fool?

        @yeselson @tanehisi That was from Mailer head-butted Vidal. Vidal's response: "Words fail Norman Mailer once again."

        @tanehisi @yeselson One of the great literary quips. SCTV did a parody of Mailer/Vidal feud as a Tide Commercial.

        @tanehisi @HeerJeet That's what everybody says. Until then, Armies of the Night still my fave Mailer--and Miami and the Siege of Chicago too

        @tanehisi @HeerJeet Yeah, he was obviously into that crap--took boxing lessons/friends with boxers--images/reality of violence

        @tanehisi @HeerJeet He championed that prisoner-writer, which sounds good, but then the guy kills somebody as soon as he's released.

        @tanehisi @HeerJeet OTOH, if you see a list of ten favorite novels, Pride and Prejudice is right near the top! Go figure....
