@HeerJeet Yes! Most of what I imagine I know about US fiction comes from Fielder's *Love and Death in the American Novel*.
Queer studies, disability studies, tranhumanism, cultural studies: Leslie Fiedler, now sadly forgotten, did all that in the 1940s-1970s.

@HeerJeet You would have thought Fiedler's FREAKS would have been one of the primary critical texts of the post-Eraserhead era, but no. -
@JamesWolcott Yeah, FREAKS is a neglected classic, very suggestive and full of ideas that can be applied to lots of art.
