Back in the 20th century, there were people who worried that humanity was on the cusp of utopia of widely shared wealth & machines doing all the work. The fear was that this would lead to endless spiritual boredom. This was really something some people fretted over.

A fundamental misunderstanding of people and the tenacity of structures meant to keep them low.

Honestly, pretty sure this argument remains as a core pillar of conservative rationalization.

That if things are too nice we won't be moral anymore ( or ever )? Really

It’s been argued that the rise of fascism is because people are bored. I have a few far right members of my family who i believe are fascists because they are bored because modern technology has made their lives easy.

It’s still being fretted over when you discuss economic abundance and policies to help achieve it.

Here in the 21st, I worry that humanity is on the cusp of a dystopia of concentrated wealth and machines doing all the meaningful or respected work that used to lead to social citizenship. The fear is still that this will lead to endless spiritual boredom. Not that different?

This is not as dumb as it sounds. Leisure can lead to stultification. See E. Auerbach's chapter in Mimesis called In the Hotel de la Mole. A fascinating topic though.

Kind of reminds me of all those office movies in 90s where characters we’re having an Existential crisis because all their needs were met, like I want all my needs met I already have the existential crisis
