Salem witch trials, violent persecution of Catholics and Mormons (eg the murder of Joseph Smith), the Red Scare. McCarthyism took off despite there were like 6 communists in the US. America has had weird and unsavory political movements long before algorithms or social media.

Eh, I think Soviet espionage was clearly a real issue in the '50s (read Klehr/Haynes), but that's not a justification for McCarthyism obviously

I think the consensus is almost all the significant spying was in the 1940s, broken up by code-breakers. 1950s communist spy network was very small and ineffectual (basically Rudolph Abel doing some painting).

I'll have to brush up on my Soviet espionage history!

Once the bomb got out the size and scale didn't matter. It was going to be a powerful political weapon

OK, but once the bomb got out they sure weren't going to go "Oh, I guess they got what they wanted. No need to look any further." That would have been wildly irresponsible.

That is most certaintly not the consensus. Russians had US intelligence penetrated until the fall of the Soviet Union. Starting with fact that it wasn't broken up because Bill Weisband told the Soviets about Venona.
