It's worth unpacking "whenever we've tried to [have] this fight in the past." Democrats (and also Sanders) actually downplayed the guns issue after 1994. But Sandy Hooks & subsequent horrors made that harder politically. Politics isn't just about strategy: events have impacthttps://twitter.com/davidshor/status/1529627802735104000 …

I have the stronger take that the whenever we’ve tried to had this fight in the past (which we’ve chosen to do a bunch of times in the past decade) it’s actually made things worse! Constantly repeating a strategy that has hurt people is bad!

There's a cold Machiavellian argument that b/c gun issue costs Dems votes & real gun control is virtually impossible in USA system, best to ignore the issue. The flaw here is that mass killings will continue, will make the news, & avoiding it will make Dems look weak.

There's a type of political strategizing predicated on idea that parties can choose which issues to highlight, which is true only to a limited degree in a nation with a robust civil society & weak or weakish parties. External events impose themselves.

between covid, guns, and police violence it’s high times for people who label themselves empiricists but proceed as if externalities don’t exist

Formulating clean, understandable policy design seems ever so hard for Dems. @JoshTPM did one all on his own: "We need two senators, here's what happens if we get them." A clean gun pitch. "We're not taking on the 2nd. We're taking on weapons of war on the streets of the USA."

I think that, plus the claim that losing votes significantly increases the chance that Trump becomes president and has the FBI arrest his political enemies, is exactly the argument.

That's actually the single best lesson for the Democrats. They could have canceled all student debt the first month of Biden's presidency. By this point on one but the people who it affected would remember it happened.

Don't really disagree, but do want to note that many dem leaders are pretty inept at fighting on this issue in a way that doesn't alienate more reasonable moderate and leftist gun owners.
