I've never seen people more committed to doing absolutely nothing, not ever the minimal bully pulpit messaging, as the current Democratic establishment. They accuse their enemies of Green Lanternism but they are practicing Garfieldism (i.e. just let me sleep).https://twitter.com/atrupar/status/1530937356806766595 …

That’s not popularism. Popularism would say do the popular things (like background checks) when you have the votes to do so. The Dem Party’s refusal to go to war over legitimately popular policies is something else entirely

that's what they're calling it though. it's always the same do nothing message, they just cycle through various names and justifications every so often

this isn't even an exaggeration, he deletes his old tweets so it's not around anymore but yglesias has explicitly said he thinks optimal political strategy is to campaign on a big agenda and then do nothing in office, it's wild

Sometimes I get the impression that they’ve simply priced in a reactionary takeover of the government and have deluded themselves into thinking that this will allow them to be in relatively good standing when the time comes.

Gun control shows the limits of popularism. Gun control policies like background checks and red flag laws poll really well but somehow don’t happen.

"Popularism" was always nonsense. The Republican Party has doggedly pursued an incredibly unpopular agenda for fifty years. And has implemented almost all of it. A political party being clever and having strong will is far more important than trying to hit the popular bullseye.
