The USA used to be known as a "can-do" nation -- often criticized for its national tendency to disregard prudential concerns and overemphasizing the power of change. Now it's the nation that has most embraced the rhetoric of futility across the political spectrum

It's been an "American't" nation since Reagan, and it has been a conscious choice. Doing things cost money, is hard, and if you succeed people will want you to do it more often - all mortal sins to a noisy minority that has had a monopoly on the Republican party since the 1970s.

Pretty ironic that Reagan successfully managed to brand this shift to dramatic pessimism about the power of government in an upbeat, optimistic, and affirmative wayhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUMqic2IcWA …

Yeah it’s mind-boggling..The Most Exceptional Country…but yet at every turn we’re told “oh no we couldn’t possibly do that—this is America!”

I’ve been talking about this for years(particularly in regards to healthcare), this sorta “reverse American exceptionalism” that’s infected our country. Im glad bigger people are putting their words behind it and using their platform to attack it. Will it be enough? Gotta hope so

Seems like the political right (which includes the bulk of elected Democrats) has had little to no trouble imposing its will on society for the past 40+ years, which doesn’t scream “embraced the rhetoric of futility” to me.

I began to think this living in Louisiana in 2005 during Katrina. I opened my eyes and they haven't been shut since.

I can imagine. I don’t necessarily think the feeling of futility is misplaced in a lot of realms - but resignation to this as the way things will inexorably be is obviously no way to enact change for the better.
