Ideally, we would respond to mass shootings with meaningful federal legislation restricting access to firearms in general, and assault weapons in particular...

But if that isn't on the table, it does seem like the most constructive response to these atrocities would be for the national media to ignore them so as to cease inspiring copycat attacks, higher gun sales, and further firearm deregulation in red states...pic.twitter.com/oz23jn9MLd

(but, of course, that is just as impossible a goal as getting this Congress to ban AR-15s, so...)

I have been thinking about the copy-cat problem and it might be possible at least to get media consensus on downplaying specific information about shooters so as to at least tamp down on fame motivation.

Stuff spreads through online forums anyways, seems marginal in the end.

It seems like that had briefly become the procedure. I don't specifically seek out the name of shooters, so I only hear their name if it's mentioned on the news or is floating out on the timeline. I think this is the first mass shooter whose name I know since Parkland.

I knew ideological motivations for New Zealand, El Paso, Atlanta spa, and Buffalo shootings. But I didn't (and still don't) know their names. It's a contrast with Marc Lepine, Dylan Roof, and Elliot Rodgers who I think were names that news savvy people would recognize.

This is a good idea regardless, but I do wonder if that would decrease the exposure for the people most likely to commit mass shootings. The fame and idolatry of mass shooters is coming from places like 4chan, not the NYT or CNN.
