When you start down this road you realize it's more efficient to head the other way. How many highbrows have there really been who sincerely didn't like lowbrow stuff. They were intellectually & culturally convicted as to its artistic emptiness & also they plain didn't like it.https://twitter.com/The_Fence_Mag/status/1529048550579085314 …

The novelist, Sir Kingsley Amis, memorably described Arnold Schwarzenegger's THE TERMINATOR as 'a flawless masterpiece'. Do you know of any other highbrow fans of 'lowbrow' art?

I think that's true of very, very few artists. Maybe some critics like the Leavises (F.R. more than Queenie).

I would like Harry Shearer to record an audiobook of Clement Greenberg essays, read in a Monty Burns voice.

One reason I gravitated towards McLuhan/Kenner/Ong is that they didn't see any discontinuity between Eliot and Guest, but rather continuity of world that created both.

One reason I gravitate towards Clement Greenberg is that he's lost out so completely that there's considerable value in trying to enter into the mind of someone who thinks highbrow art is just ... higher.

One reason I always enjoyed Dwight MacDonald was that he realized that culture was being commodified, perhaps in new ways. He came at it from an elite perspective and bemoaned the loss of high culture as he understood it, but in his own way pointed to the sameness of culture.

MacDonald is halfway between Greenberg and someone like McLuhan - or Robert Warshaw. I find it makes MacDonald extremely confusing to read, which is fun.
