This is because his output doesn't hold up in the same way. Not even close really. He was a caricature longer than he was seminal, and we know in hindsight the great blues artists and Buddy Holly were far more influential on the future of rock music.

It’s part of the discourse around black people owning rock music and Elvis being called the king of rock. Rock is just as much a black genre as it is a white genre in terms of influences. Did Elvis steal black culture? Absolutely. Is rock black? Not really.

imo he has less of an artistic lineage than the beatles, cash, dylan, jackson, etc. part of it was he didn’t write his own music. part of it was I don’t think he was as much of a musicians musician

What are you basing this on? I have a hard time believing he’s not bigger than Sinatra right now

Something about the era he peaked in ended up turning him into bland cultural background noise. All those others had something tragic or countercultural in their music or life story. The hip-shaking furor makes people think how silly people were not how transgressive Elvis was.

If country music had evolved into something other than Grotesquely Corporate Pop music for suburban accountants who own pickup trucks he might have a different legacy
