Stanley Kauffmann was a great critic who couldn’t have been less interested in blockbusters. He championed the work of Kieslowski, Wong Kar-wai, Holofcener, Kiarostami, and countless other great filmmakers.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1528529496839798786 …

Pauline Kael, my favorite critic, also panned 2001, Star Wars, Grease (dismissing in a single word: "klutzburger"), Psycho, and (in the Afterglow interview) every Coen Bros. movie except Raising Arizona.

Kael and Kauffmann are strong example of the proposition that criticism isn't about being a barometer of opinion so much as power of observation.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1318392475795423232 …

“Lucid and observant” (in your original thread) sets the bar pretty low and doesn’t come close to describing Kauffmann’s achievement in decades of criticism (film, theater, books).
