2. The whole Azov business really illustrates how disinformation industry is a project to impose a consensus around issues that are in fact contentious and need to be argued out and battled in the political realm.

3. The honest political argument would be "Yes, the Azov regiment is fascist, but Ukraine is facing an existential threat and in war you make the alliances you can, as with the Western allies working with Stalin in WWII." A difficult argument but worth taking seriously.

4. Instead of making the difficult but serious political case, advocates instead are trying to use the language of debunking disinformation to obfuscate reality. This in itself will, in the long run, undermine trust and ability to form consensus.pic.twitter.com/ywodG1SvhB

Shockingly, North American media is completely ignoring this story. Probably because Putin used them to justify his invasion? What am I missing?

You're missing pretty much everything, because re-framing the original thread as "debunking Azov-are-not-Nazi propaganda" is disingenuous at very best.

Well, if we were completely honest, there are Neonazis all across the Fmr USSR. For example
@DRogozin is a Nazi. The reason is Russians taught in details about Nazis to explain whom USSR opposed to in WW2. If you’re against Soviets: Nazi ideology the first thing comes to mind.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Yes there are hardcore fascists in Azov. But also I've noticed a lot of people who identify as Nazis because to be a Nazi in that part of the world is defined primarily as hardcore opposition to Russia. It's hard to parse out the actual politics of a meme as misused as "Nazi."
