I get that this is a TV simplification but @adamconover, it is driving me crazy that you are claiming that Roosevelt's response to the Banking crisis when entering office was the FDIC. It was not, he provided liquidity after a national bank holiday.

In fact, he opposed government deposit insurance but the public outcry was so overwhelming that it ended up passing congress- and he acquiesced by signing it- that June.

This is a key political point, that a lot of what people value from "New Deal" didn't come from White House but outside pressure (which FDR deserves credit for acceding to). Same for social security and union friendly laws.
