Sure it is. If you wanted to be pedantic it’s “speculative fiction” but it’s definitely a murder mystery in a unique fantasy world.

b/c they mean realistic fiction, which is obviously by it's definition the least interesting form of fiction, so it's funny that they're mad that it's the least interesting, imo.

"Literary fiction" has a number of arbitrary, culturally located rules, such as no sci-fi / fantasy elements, with some modest exceptions (people keep forgetting that Beloved is a ghost story!) and/or it sneaks in via magical realism

I think these distinctions are pretty snooty but Robinson’s writing style is very nuts and bolts, minimal character interiority, very plot-centric. Rather Asimov-esque IMO. It’s very clearly non-“literary.” And I like him a lot!

Mieville and Le Guin have even published novels that are explicitly literary fiction. Also, Le Guin is one of the most underappreciated poets of the last fifty years.
