But it is misinformation to describe the Azov Battalion as “a Nazi unit” when we know it’s a disciplined military unit under the command of a democratic government.

Azov used to be a self-organized far-right militia of soccer hooligans. It’s been reorganized and professionalized. At the very least, if you want to argue that Azov is Nazi today, the onus is on you to supply evidence of far-right behavior or even quantify far-right membership.

You could always read the reporting that answers these questions, the kind that the original post implied was disinformation.https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/3/1/who-are-the-azov-regiment …

I have read it and it’s profoundly misleading because it focuses almost entirely what Azov used to be like without grappling with the profound changes it has undergone.

Azov dipping bullets in Lard to kill Chechen "orcs" was two months ago, and they're still all running around with sonnenrands and Totenkopf skull patches. I have seen very little evidence they have changed that muchhttps://twitter.com/ng_ukraine/status/1497924614865002497 …

Donald Trump publicly called on US soldiers to dip bullets in pig’s blood, and it was appallingly racist, but that didn’t thereby make the entire US military fascist.

If an American military unit had actually done so, how would you have described that behaviour? What would you think of the internal politics of the members of the unit who went along with it?

Somewhere between an appallingly racist joke and a war crime, depending on factors we can’t judge from the clip. I would want a full investigation to find out who was involved and who authorized it to be posted on the official twitter feed.

But if the question is whether the Azov Battalion is a Nazi organization, this clip doesn’t come close to indicting the entire 900-person organization. If this is your only contemporary evidence, then the claim that Azov is Nazi is misinformation.

The characterization of Azov as a Nazi organization depends on knowing the history of the Azov as documented by much journalism and policy reporting on their fascist ideology and violence.

But it ignores the journalism that explains how the Azov Battalion transformed from a mob of soccer Nazi soccer hooligans doing shakedowns in Donbas to an elite military unit within the Ukrainian National Guard and ultimately the democratic Ukrainian government.

There’s important reporting to be done on how many of the original fascists are still in Azov and what influence they have. But saying Azov is a fascist organization because it has some fascist members is like saying it’s a Jewish organization because it has some Jews.
