The quality of Coppola's post-'70s output declined more definitively than that of peers like Altman, Scorsese, or Spielberg, but that '70s run--lordy.

Obviously it's an arbitrary number, but even looking through the much longer catalogues of the studio-system biggies--Ford, Hawks, Hitchcock, etc.--it's striking how elusive four-greats-in-a-row is for any of them.

I was just watching a documentary about Altman and thinking about how movies are either stone cold masterpieces or unwatchable. It does make it interesting (and some films that are seen as bad are in fact good).
