Agreed, and ex post facto "masterplan" game-theorizing tends to completely discount the role of opportunism in politics (and history). The anti-abortion movement didn't "plan" Trumpism but they knew how to harness it once it happened

Right. Important distinction between "everything is part of the plan" and "we have a goal and will evaluate circumstances to find opportunities to advance the goal." A study of the foreign policy practices of Otto Von Bismarck highlights this distinction nicely, I'd add.
