When the real history of neoconservatism is written, people will notice that Gertrude Himmelfarb was more a more thinker than Irving Kristol & Midge Decter as formative as Norman Podhoretz. Being anti-feminists, Himmelfarb & Decter never made those claims, but they're true.

Without being polemical, I'll say that in the Podhoretz-Decter relationship, Decter was the rock. He had his dalliances with left-liberalism & being a Norman Mailer style poète maudit. She was always firm on the Cold War liberalism synthesis of family values & militarism.

The drama here is Podhoretz had few wild years of drinking and fooling around. Decter stayed true, not just to family but ideology of family values, Israel, USA militarism. When husband ready to settle down, her gravitational pull brought him back to that.
