This is what Pelosi means, but liberals have been naive about this for years. Lots wanted Trump to win the 2016 nomination on the theory that, *obviously,* he'd lose and discredit his politics, forcing the GOP to Be Normal (disagree less w liberals).https://twitter.com/TylerDinucci/status/1523848362448936965 …

People always make a big thing when she says things like this but there’s a pretty persuasive political theory that the ability for democracies to exists is predicated on its inevitable conservative party buying into the idea of liberal democracy at all https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2017/06/ziblatt-democracy-conservative-parties/530118/ … https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1523812812434329602 …

It's the "fever will break" theory, which Biden turned into "they'll have an epiphany" theory. All of it just ignores reality - why would the GOP abandon a strategy if it works, and if they're convinced that it only doesn't work when antifa/Soros/etc steal the election?

The persistence of this sort of thing is because USA is a gerontocracy. So many in elite remember, I dunno, Eisenhower, Nixon (the good Nixon), Rockefeller, Ford, Bush Sr.. But that was all a long time ago.

It’s true though. She’s sounding the alarm. We can’t just have one sane party, although that’s what we’ve got now.

Even Boehner was good for a drink & a chat. Every conservative wave has made it progressively harder for Democrats & Republicans to coexist on DC as cordial, sociable colleagues.

True that. These people are way too old to govern and remember some idealized Shangri-La of policy-making. Nostalgia in the pejorative sense.

Oh, this was a version of my comment before I scrolled down. Look at the House Republicans who rode in with Reagan in 80. They set the table for the world we’re living in now. Tom Snyder interviewing John LeBoutier on NBC late night is key.

I think it's partly that, but also partly that they just can't believe these nice people, their colleagues, who are (often) so friendly to them, can be the monsters that they are.

Yeah, but I dont think it's memory. It's more that they "eat lunch with these people", and talk to them all the time, and think of them as friends, and the Republicans lie to them about what they think and want, and they're fooled by that. Basic social bias.
