I've been skeptical of the "coming American civil war" (because I think the fault lines in contemporary USA, while real, don't break down along civil war lines). But this thread lays out some plausible scenarios of a fraying polity becoming more violent.https://twitter.com/JeffSharlet/status/1522544272481861635 …

Much bigger political violence--& maybe some form of civil war--seems possible or likely now. Overturning Roe won't be the cause but the spark for a conflict many, mostly on the Right, have been longing for. Consider some scenarios...

It will be more akin to the Troubles, although possibly far worse.

Things definitely have the potential right now to collapse into prolonged violence here. We are hurtling towards something big and violent really fast.

On a tamer note, if not civil war, these hypoethicals suggest how kicking the issue “back to the states” really won’t resolve anything.

At the very least it is going to accelerate the trend of “progressive” federalism which is a conservative victory in its own right

The minute blue states start embracing federalism to do things conservatives don’t like, they’ll use the federal government to crush “states rights.”

We are two countries separated by hatred, bigotry and white supremacy. I don’t see how this ends well

Don't forget Christo-fascism, which dovetails nicely with white supremacy.

The attack on Washington DC on 1/6 was..an armed attack on the nation’s Capitol with the goals of assassinating government officials in an attempt to overthrow the government and install a new one. What exactly do you call that in terms of war?
