French cinema has the mythical "kitchen scene" in "Les Tontons flingueurs". Much of it is based on the dialogue and it's practically impossible to convey in translation.

The decision to kill Pesci *couldn't* be shown because it leads to the most surreal Scorsese moment ever where his past tense voiceover gets cut short by him getting hit in the present and its like the death caught up to him in the vocal booth. Wouldn't work if we knew beforehand

Mind you he's narrating an event after the fact: "So I went out to meet these guys with my brother Dominic.." which was where he got killed. I think you even hear his voiceover gasp when he gets hit. It briefly turns into a Charlie Kaufman film for some reason there.
