I think the proper take here is that films do have a politics but it's usually muddled, because films have to appeal to conflicting audiences.

actually think it used to be pretty normal to point out how stuff was fascist (cf Andre in My Dinner with Andre)—the dumb one-upmanship required in every form of online conversation just turned it into this nuclear option that people freak out over

That's an interesting point. Pauline Kael used "fascist" fairly often in her criticism.
