the new cool guy position on here is that films don't have politics and you should just passively imbibe them like a little piggy eating slop

I think the proper take here is that films do have a politics but it's usually muddled, because films have to appeal to conflicting audiences.

yea yea yea. but i'd like to live in a world where I could say a piece of art was fascistic without everyone being like "nerd stuff! cancel culture!" just relax. everyone's got opinions.

This is why I think of mass media as a failure mode for materialist ideological messaging. Works great for myth-making!

All films are fascist. It doesn't matter because they're commercial films not armed brigades

The enterprise also assumes a fixed definite political meaning of narrative art works. The best Marxist literary criticism I’ve read is Lukács’ essays on the bourgeois Mann. His analysis is Marxist critique of fascism, so definitely left, but the works themselves? I don’t know

So “problematic” ends up being the metric. Death in Venice is certainly problematic. And this is just culture war coding, 1984 is problematic, Lolita is problematic, etc. Doesn’t mean much

It's muddled because liberalism can't identify the problem in any system it has to be singular bad actors making the system bad. That's why an industry largely worked by union members are rarely pro union
