Sometimes it feels like we Dems are so obsessed with avoiding another McGovern that we blind ourselves to the risk of another Adlai or Dukakis - technocratic neoliberals beloved by the elite but not the general public.

I don’t think anyone loved Dukakis.

Lol fair. But his appeal was strong enough that he beat a tough field to win the nomination.

The field was neoliberals, Gephardt, and Jesse Jackson, though. Who of them do you think had the best chance against Bush? (I think Hart could have won, but that’s a hard what-if.)

Idk, hypotheticals are hard, but clearly Bush was beatable and Dems lost a winnable race. It's also a bit of a chicken and egg thing because I think the larger and more interesting story is why the party was captured by an ideology whose entire pitch was based on electability...

Because traditional Democratic policies were perceived to have given us stagflation and Ronald Reagan.

It was the work of ideology to recast the austeritarian neo-liberal Jimmy Carter as a "traditional liberal."

Yes, this is part of the story - when Carter, Dukakis and Gore lost, the post-election spin labelled them as crazy left progressives. Lieberman threw Gore under the bus! You saw a similar thing with Hillary.

Who exactly in the 1988 field do you have in mind as being further left than Dukakis and more electable? Dukakis wasn’t Bernie Sanders but he was well to the left of the general electorate and his most prominent challenger from the left (Jackson) would not have done better

I’m not talking about Carter specifically. I’m talking about Keynesianism and labor unions.
