this sounds very much like the discourse surrounding mccarthyism where some liberals were like “look mccarthy is a thug but the communists are a real problem” https://twitter.com/jonathanchait/status/1520002700049629184 …

The way of squaring this circle is that the FBI had actually crushed the real existing soviet espionage operation by the late 1940s and McCarthy came in late and was grandstanding over crumbs

By the late 1940s there were far more Nazis (or "former" Nazis) working for USA government than communists.

I think the concern here is with communists who weren’t working for the US government

Domestic communists in the USA, who never numbered more than a few hundred thousand in a country of 120 million+, are exactly the type of unpopular minority that liberal democracies are supposed to tolerate. But USA, including liberals, failed to do so.

I think the concern was less people who sympathized with communism as an abstract ideology than with those who were working to subvert the American government on behalf of the USSR. Not for McCarthy, but I’m not talking about him.

McCarthy, J. Edgar Hoover and Harry Truman did far more to subvert basic principles of democracy than domestic American communists.

How is it a non-sequitur? Your concern is subversion of government. I think the evidence shows pretty clearly that American democracy was subverted by the acts of Hoover, McCarthy & Truman.

What I said was that communist subversion was an actual and legitimate threat. Your attempt to characterize what you think is (or should be) my concern is just whataboutism, as you understand perfectly. Hoover et al didn’t “subvert” in the sense I’m using the term—just wordgames.

Hoover didn't "subvert"? Only if you assume holding up the government as it was then staffed and oriented--as opposed to ideals upon which it was ostensibly based--was the ultimate good. Because COINTELPRO, for example, was a hell of a subversion of principle.
